The world of vocational training is undergoing a significant transformation as trade apprentices are increasingly being taught to combine traditional skills with cutting-edge technology. A recent report highlights the growing trend towards integrating heritage craft with modern innovations, but this raises important questions about the cost.

In the UK, there has been a notable shift in apprenticeships, with more students opting for higher-level qualifications. This change is driven by the recognition that modern trade skills require a deep understanding of both traditional techniques and digital tools. However, as technology becomes increasingly integrated into vocational training, there is a risk that apprentices will lose sight of the fundamental principles of their chosen craft.

For example, Ollie Priestley, a 29-year-old heritage vehicle technician apprentice at Tolman in Warwickshire, combines traditional skills like welding and glazing with modern technologies such as CAD and 3D printing. This holistic approach is essential to equip trade apprentices for the challenges of the 21st century.

Not all industries are embracing this hybrid model, though. In some sectors, the emphasis on digital skills has created an imbalance between theoretical knowledge and practical expertise. Chris Iveson, CEO of FourJaw Manufacturing Analytics, warns that if training becomes too narrow, apprentices can lack a proper understanding of materials, methods, tooling, quality, and process.

The scissor-making industry is a case in point. Once a thriving sector with over 100 workshops in Sheffield, it now has just two firms left: Ernest Wright and William Whiteley. These companies rely on cutting-edge technologies like 3D metal printing to stay competitive, but this risks erasing traditional skills that are essential to their craft.

Elliott Nurcombe’s experiences highlight the importance of preserving both digital and manual skills. While working part-time at Ernest Wright and studying aerospace engineering, he notes that technology can enhance trade skills but not replace them entirely: “Maintenance wise, a lot of the parts for our machines simply don’t exist anymore… But I don’t think that technology will take over or overshadow what goes on in this workshop.”

The future of vocational training is clear: trade apprentices need to be equipped with both technical and practical skills. This requires a more nuanced approach to education, one that balances the benefits of modern technologies with the importance of preserving traditional expertise.

Trade lies not in replacing human expertise with machines but in harnessing their power to augment and enhance it. The story of Ernest Wright, scissor-maker, serves as a poignant reminder of what happens when traditional skills are lost: “Now just Ernest Wright, and William Whiteley, located on the other side of town, remain. While Ernest Wright is proud of its long history… Now we can make just six pairs of scissors through metal printing [as tests]. Then if we want to change things, we don’t have to do it on 6,000 pairs.”
